Estate Planning and Self-Reflection

Can estate planning support the self-reflection process as you navigate a journey with cancer?

In my experience with survivors of early-stage breast cancer, I noticed that there was a deep sense of urgency to live meaningfully. But even with this urgency, visits to health professionals, food, exercise, herbs and supplements, and much more can be constantly on the mind. With my own health journey, I walk alongside the interruptions that a medical condition can present and the quest to find something that works, both physically and emotionally.

I also recognize that cancer can offer experiences and feelings that we often do not wish for. And as a legal professional, I find inspiration in exploring the notion that what I can offer through estate planning is self-reflective work. Navigating the emotional process that a medical condition can bring may include planning resources to support financial and medical treatment decisions, but also might be a reflective process on family dynamics and relationships as you decide who to trust to help manage your affairs if you cannot independently do so. This may require you to contemplate how others might respond to certain situations, and I believe that in building this space to explore concerns about the end-of-life process, this can augment meaning in life and amidst adversity, bring some peace of mind.
